Multiple Currencies in TntMPD

Do all of your ministry partners make pledges and give financially in only one currency? If so, please disregard the rest of this message!

On the other hand, if your financial pledges and gifts come to you in more than one currency, then I could really use your insight. At some point in the future, I'd like to enhance TntMPD to help you manage your multi-currency support base. I personally have no experience with such a situation. So please let me know what you've found helpful or difficult in your multi-currency support situation. Also, I've put together some detailed thoughts I have on this subject here:

Please take a few minutes to read it over and tell me your thoughts.  Either email me your thoughts, or drop them off in the "Suggestion Box" on this website.

Thanks,
Troy Wolbrink

Hi Troy, any evolution on this currency issue? Is Tnt still accepting only one currency? (I'll give you a hand soon commenting on the doc, sorry I haven't yet, just found now this discussion)

No movement on building the feature yet.  So your suggestions would come at a good time.

Troy - thanks for thinking about this! I just stumbled across this post. I do have financial partners from two other countries - Hong Kong and Canada. They do give in their respective currencies, but by the time it reaches my account it has been converted into dollars, so perhaps I don't really need a multi-currency option. BUT - as I read the statements I get from the agencies in the countries where they give, it might be handy to track the gift they gave in their currency so I can thank them more accurately. I suppose I could just enter this as a "thank task" and then go from there. No real need to track their currency on the MPD screen. However, if I were to track their gifts in the originating currency, I would like TNT to :(1) allow entry of the gift in the originating currency (2) have a source for the conversion rate on the day they gave it (3) put the gift on the MPD screen in both the originating currency and/or my currency (give me the screen option to rotate between all three views - view original currency only, view target currency only, or view both currencies together). Also, the conversion rate should be noted for each gift - since it changes day to day. In my case it would also be handy to have, for each contact, the name/contact info for the organization in their country to which they send their gift, since they do not send it directly to the US organization for which I work. I supose I could put that info in the "Other Address" block. Sorry this is kind of blathery - but I hope it identifies some of the information that could be tracked when dealing with multiple currencies. Blessings to you!

Hey Troy,

Just curious how this is coming along and if you have a time frame that you think you might have it ready for testing.  thanks for all your work on this!

I'm hoping to move forward on this "relatively soon".  It's currently in my plan for the next fiscal year (Sep 2010-Aug 2011).  There are so many other competing priorities right now (TntMPD on the Mac being a major one), but I haven't forgot about multi-currency!  The focus will start off on just the "MPD Analysis" view in TntMPD.  If I don't limit my scope, I'll get stuck in "analysis paralysis" and never get it started.

Sounds great, thanks Troy!

Hi Troy, I have been using TntMPD for a year and a half now and it helps me to save a lot of time. Thanks for the great job. As we receive gifts in Euro, Dollars and Pound Sterling, I would greatly appreciate if TntMPD could handle multiple currencies ; it would help me save some more time every month. At the moment, I synchronize my gifts with three different servers (US, UK and France) and all gifts are added in TntMPD as if they were all in Euros (my database currency). I have defined a user field "currency", which I set for each partner to his currency. After synchronizing the gifts, I have to rework all the gifts that are not in Euro. So, I filter the contacts whose currency is not Euro and I modify the amount of the gifts. I store the original amount in the gift description field to keep it. Then I open Google to give me the amount in Euro and replace it in the gift record. This takes a lot of time for a very manual work. Moreover, for the gifts coming from the United Kingdom, there are two records to handle: one for the proper gift and one for the gift aid added by the government. Sometimes if I sychronize again the gift for the same time period (by mistake or if I forgot that I already did), then all the amounts are overwritten and I have to do the job again :-( . All this to say that handling multiple currencies would definitely help a lot! And it might help you to know how we work. I will try to give a feedback on the doc you wrote with the different options, but for me I think it is useful to keep both the original amount and the converted one, and the historical exchange rate as it shows how we can lose (or why not gain) quite a lot of support just because of the exchange rates. Thanks again for considering this feature.

I'm a bit late but wondering if anything was implemented regarding this topic, as we have to start fundraising within the country even we come on staff, so I'm already dealing with at least 2 currencies.

Hi Daniel,

I'm planning on adding multi-currency support to TntMPD 3.0 for later this year.
