By default, Mac uses the Function keys (F1, F2, F3. . .) to do special features (little image printed on the F keys). To actually press the F1 key, you need to press the fn key and the F1 key simultaneously. Same for any of the other Function keys. You can change this default behavior in the System Preferences...
